ComChart EMR FAQs

1. What is ComChart® ?

ComChart®is an electronic medical record (EMR) program that has been designed, developed and refined since 1992, by Hayward Zwerling, M.D., FACP, FACE. It is one of the old EMRs available and, as a result, the most finely tuned to meet the needs of the physician.

2. What is the purpose of ComChart® ?

ComChart®is designed to eliminate the need for the traditional paper record. In the process, ComChart®will reduce office overhead by reducing the need for ancillary staff, eliminate costs associated with mailing records/prescriptions, and improve the productivity of a physician's office. It has been estimated that the "hard costs" saved by the use of ComChart®EMR is in the range of $25,000-$40,000 per year per healthcare provider.

3. How much does ComChart® Software cost?
The cost of ComChart is a function of several factors, including the number of health care providers, the number of computer stations, the level of the user's computer expertise, the amount of time required to train the physician and their staff, the need for pre-sales customization of ComChart, the type of technical support desired and other variables. Thus, a precise price can only be given once all these variables are defined.

4. What makes ComChart unique?
ComChar®has an "open architecture," meaning that it can be readily modified to meet the need of the user. The underlying programming language is FileMaker Pro 8, which is a well established, cross platform, relational database. Most importantly, ComChart?s unique "one click navigation" feature allows the physician to move rapidly from one area of the patient's chart to another with only one click. Few, if any, EMRs offer this degree of ease of navigation that is so essential to the function of an effective EMR.

5. Can I customize ComChart®for my practice?
ComChart can be used "out of the box" and can be customized without the need to change the programming language. Some users may choose to modifiy the programming language to further tailor ComChart to meet there office's need. We recognize that only a minority of physicians will have the time and the ability to modify ComChart's source code. For those who need to have their version of ComChart modified, and can not do it themselves, ComChart will offer customized programming for an hourly fee.

6. How does ComChart®integrate with laboratory and radiology reports/results?
ComChart®can automatically file lab results, radiology reports and dictated progress notes directly into the patient's chart, thus eliminating the need for your staff to pull and re-file a chart every time a piece of paper comes into your office.

7. Most EMR programs do not have objective productivity measurement tools that are built in. Does ComChart®have productivity measurement tools?
ComChart® EMR has a number of productivity tools that are built in to the program. They include four (4) different kinds of productivity reports as follows: (a) reports which show the number of visits per month, (b) the distribution of E & M codes, (c) the distribution of insurance companies and (d) the distribution of the referring physician. The user can ask for a productivity report for any time interval or they may compare their productivity, for a particular month, over the years. For multiple physician practices, the data can be sorted and presented by doctor. For solo practice specialties, the data can be sorted and reported by staff member, such as nurse(s), physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and others.

8. Does ComChart allow users to dictate progress notes, and if so, how?
Users can dictate their progress notes using IBM's ViaVoice or Dragon's NaturalSpeech (PC and Mac) or iListen (Mac).

9. What is Dr. Zwerling’s, Owner of ComChart EMR,  background?
Dr. Zwerling practices internal medicine and endocrinology in Lowell, Massachusetts. He is board certified by the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He completed his internal medical training at Vanderbilt University and endocrinology fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He also holds engineering degrees from Cornell University and MIT. As a result of his training in engineering and medicine, Dr. Zwerling has created an EMR that has a unique user interface and program structure. The net effect is that ComChart® mimics the structure of the traditional paper medical record, is extremely customizable while also having the advantages that arise from the computerization of the medical record. In addition, the user is able to navigate between sections of a patient's chart with only one click of the mouse. (See FAQ #5).
Dr. Zwerling has lectured about, and published on the topic of electronic medical records. Articles about his experience with EMRs have appeared in Physician’s and Computers, Health Data Management, Medical Computing Today, Virtual Medical World, Medical Software Reviews, Medical Economics and others.
